Public Cloud Hosting FAQ

What is public cloud?

Public cloud is the modern way of using IT server infrastructure. Instead of configuring servers from scratch and maintaining them individually, public cloud offers a virtualized environment where workloads can be deployed in seconds with a few clicks in the interface or API.

Also, instead of paying for the whole server, including any unutilized resources, in a public cloud you only pay for what you use.

Internally, it’s a large array of hundreds of servers connected together in a cluster with redundant storage and compute. Contrary to individual servers, a cluster is highly available, meaning that no hardware failures will bring your workloads down as in case of any issues, secondary or tertiary layers take over and provide 100% availability.

Public cloud is a great choice for most business cases: from running your own applications to reselling it with value-add services.

There are many reliable ways to migrate your data and workloads to the cloud. At Sharktech, we use a multitude of tools depending on the business case and downtime tolerance.

Some clients are OK with an overnight maintenance window; some would rather pay a premium for a live migration with zero downtime. Talk to us if you’d like to find out what option will be optimal for your business case.

Data transfer cost is a big concern for many because it often becomes one of the largest portions of the monthly bill. The common practice by cloud service providers is to charge for ingress and egress (incoming and outgoing traffic) with egress costs being much more expensive.

This tactic often makes it prohibitively expensive for clients to take their data out of the cloud and, essentially, locks them in. But even if ingress/egress volumes are equal, spikes in traffic can increase the monthly bill well beyond what was expected.

We believe that the best way to address these concerns is with simplicity and transparency. Sharktech does not bill for ingress traffic at all, and our egress costs are a fraction of what big cloud companies charge. This way, we make it easy to predict future expenses and we do not impose prohibitive costs on our clients, enabling them to truly be in control of their data and not locking them in.

Public cloud is a large pool of virtualized resources that multiple companies draw from. In other words, it’s a shared environment where companies run their workloads.

Private cloud offers the same experience in terms of the user interface and virtualization, but it’s an exclusive and completely isolated cluster of servers serving the needs of only one company.

Private cloud is well suited for larger companies and enterprises with higher resource consumption. Also, a great choice for organizations adhering to specific security regulations that require complete isolation.

Bare metal dedicated servers are a solid infrastructure workhorse that has been relied on for decades. It allows direct access to the hardware that may be important for some specific types of workloads. However, it requires time and expertise to configure. Setting up multiple servers and networks between them can take a lot of effort. If redundancy is required, it has to be configured manually as well.

Cloud is a virtualized environment and it does not offer direct access to the hardware. However, it is often much simpler to work with since cloud platforms allow deploying VMs, networks, VPNs, routes, etc., very easily via the interface.

Additional convenience comes from the cloud’s scalability as it provides access to unlimited resources that can be consumed on demand. One of the bigger cloud advantages is reliability provided by redundancies built into the system. If there’s no specific need to access bare metal and configure everything from scratch, cloud is often a better choice.

NVMe is the fastest cloud storage option, offering low latency and high throughput—ideal for databases, AI workloads, and high-performance applications. However, NVMe is also the most expensive as the performance comes at a cost.

SSDs provide a good balance of speed and cost for general-purpose use. HDDs are slower but more affordable, making them suitable for large archives and backup storage. The right choice depends on your performance needs and budget.

AWS and other hyperscalers, such as Google and Azure, are known to be quite costly. It’s not a massive problem with big companies, but it can be detrimental to small and medium enterprises. At Sharktech, we guarantee very high quality and at least 40% cost savings compared to hyperscalers.

Cloud Hosting is a form of hyperconverged virtualization that connects infrastructure level resources to a scalable, redundant and easy-to-manage online platform.

Cloud virtual systems (CVS) is a stand-alone service that allows you to create virtual machines with limited interoperability and resource availability. A cloud is a network of interconnected servers.

A dedicated Cloud is a prepaid model of Public Cloud Hosting. With Dedicated Cloud, you prepay for the resources you wish to use and can request an increase of these resources at any given time. Public Cloud Hosting allows you to exceed your limit at any given time but be billed for hourly usage.

Yes, you have exclusive access to your resources and are given the functionality to create network and system security measures to enhance your security features.

On-Premise Solutions require expensive early investment in data center solutions (i.e. power redundancy, cooling, physical security), equipment, and a technical team managing these resources, and planning scalability. With our Public Cloud Hosting, you are utilizing our pre-built shared, but secured, cloud hosting environment, which our team manages at a fraction of the cost of on-premise solutions.

While we are indeed a smaller company than those big names, that is not necessarily a bad thing! This allows us to provide you a more focused cost-effective solution. Unlike the big names, our solutions do not run on proprietary software locking your business in place. Instead, we provide you an open-sourced based solution ensuring your success is empowered by your freedom.
